Backflow Prevention in Toronto & The Greater Toronto Area
As a homeowner or business owner, you may have heard of the term “backflow” from your plumber, but do you know exactly what it means?
Simply put, backflow is when the flow of water in your plumbing system is reversed, causing contaminated water to flow back into your clean water supply. To ensure the safety of your water supply, backflow prevention devices are installed to ensure water only flows in one direction.
It’s important to note that backflow prevention devices are very different from backwater valves, which are designed to prevent sewage backups in the plumbing system. While they both serve an important function in protecting your home or business’s plumbing, they are used for different purposes and are installed in separate locations.
Backflow: Causes and Prevention
Backflow can be caused by many factors, such as a drop in water pressure in the water supply pipes, a burst in the water main, or a sudden change in water flow due to a nearby fire hydrant being opened.
Backflow can also happen when there is a cross-connection between the clean water supply and the contaminated supply.
Signs that you may be experiencing backflow in your home or business include a sudden decrease in water pressure, discoloured water, or water with an unusual smell or taste. If you notice any of these signs, contact one of our professional plumbers immediately. Our team will assess the situation and help you resolve your plumbing issues.
The good news is backflow can be averted with a backflow prevention device. The type of device needed will depend on the building’s plumbing system and potential sources of contamination.
For example, a double check valve assembly (DCVA) is commonly used for residential buildings while a reduced pressure principle assembly (RP) is used for commercial settings where hazardous materials may be present.
Which properties require backflow prevention?
Under the City of Toronto’s Water Supply Bylaw and Backflow Prevention Program, properties connected to the local water supply that are classified as moderate or severe risk must have backflow protection devices installed on all connections to the local water supply.
Some examples of moderate risk buildings include:
Hotels
Apartment buildings or residential properties with more than five units
Funeral homes
Dental clinics
Nursing homes
Some examples of severe risk properties include:
Chemical manufacturing facilities
Hospitals
Meat processing facilities
Car washes
Wastewater treatment facilities
Depending on your property’s risk classification, you may need to install different backflow prevention devices, undergo inspections, and have various regulatory obligations.
A breach in the Water Supply Bylaw can result in fines over $100,000, so it’s well worth your time as a business or property owner to do your due diligence in backflow prevention.
Backflow Device Testing in Toronto & GTA
Regular backflow device testing is key to assessing the effectiveness of the installed device. Hiring a reputed and licensed plumber for this process is crucial to ensure the test is done accurately and your plumbing system remains safe and effective.
To begin the testing process, the plumber will first shut off the water supply and inspect the backflow prevention device for any visible signs of damage or wear. Then, they will attach a gauge to the device to measure the pressure and flow of water through the device.
They will also perform a series of tests to ensure that there are no leaks or issues present. Once testing is complete, a detailed report and any necessary recommendations for repairs or replacements will be provided. This test report will also be submitted to the City of Toronto to ensure compliance with the Backflow Prevention Program.

The plumber arrived quickly and was great. He fixed the problem and was willing to answer my many questions. I did find the company to be priced much higher than I’ve paid with others, but I was glad to have my kitchen sinks working again.

◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆MUST READ. Google says my review was viewed by 5000 people. Thanks everyone. ◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆Once this company gets your money, they are gone.◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆◆
You are looking at this review because they have a lot of reviews online (Genuine or NOT!!). The records reveal that this company, despite being just 5 years old, has accumulated over a thousand reviews solely on Google. You are smart if you see the funny patterns on the reviews. They have a disproportionately high number of reviews on Google compared to other sites and claim to have received awards from their second year. This isn't the hottest restaurant in town with tons of exposure among the younger generation. Their customers are home owners. I can't even imagine how much cash this company is burning each month.
Here is my first hand experience with this circus company. I set up an appointment because they said the estimate was free. When the plumber arrived, they changed their words and told me I have to pay him $310 for an "investigation", which doesn't include the actual work.
He showed me the terms and conditions that I needed to sign, and one of them required that I express satisfaction with the work they would do, even before they commenced their tasks. I questioned the plumber multiple times about the issue but he said it's the company policy. I later spoke with the manager and he wasn't surprised at all. Do you see the company not saying anything about this in their reply? It says it all. This is how they do their business.
I should have stopped there.
The plumber failed to find the source of the leak and made a misdiagnosis. The plumber was way off and I'm not even sure if he was a fully licensed plumber or just a junior plumber with no experience.
I hired their competitor and they found the leak within 10 minutes. They were surprised why Drain King couldn't find such a simple leak. Drain King, full of clowns, doesn't know what they are doing and will waste your time and money.
It was something so simple and so basic yet these guys failed miserably.
The new company found the problem so quickly I spent a fraction of what I paid these guys.
I even invited Drain King back to my house to give them a chance to see their failure, but they refused to do it. They are too embarrassed to come and see their failure.
Once they get your money, they are gone, and you won't see them again. When you report a problem, they are going to put you on their do not service list.
(like I'm gonna pay them again for their failure)
This company is a joke.
I now know why they wanted me to sign those documents even before they start the work.
It's because a lot of their customers are not happy with their incompetency and inability to diagnose the simplest problem. You can obtain your refund by processing a chargeback.

Drain king was a great company to work with, I got three different verbal quotes from different companies and their asscoiate, Jonathan, was the only one to provide a detailed breakdown of the quote. They fixed my outdoor drain pipe (spot repair). Furthermore, for my satisfaction they did the camera is inspection on a separate day as I was not an available the day of the repair thanks assistance from Kathleen and Jason (the manager). Overall, I definitely recommend the company.

We have used Drain King several times over the last 5 years for drain issues. The admin team (Kathleen) is always super friendly and detail oriented which helps in sending an appropriate plumber who is prepared to do the job! The plumber has been the same guy for 5 years (Jonathon H) and very polite and knowledgeable. He is able to understand the issues, provide feedback on prevention, and mitigation and then quickly and thoroughly fix the issues. The workmanship is a high quality which lasts! Their quotes and billing system is reasonable and work is guaranteed. We had the same issues happen, a mystery leak in our basement that kept changing locations :( and in that month they came back several times and only charged us for the one visit until the problem was fixed! I would highly recommend Drain Kings for all your plumbing needs!!
