A guide to ontario’s 2022 energy rebates for your home

How often do you get paid for plumbing upgrades? Most likely never. That’s why all Ontario homeowners need to take advantage of the Home Efficiency Rebate (HER) program.

Enbridge Gas is offering conservation programs like HER to help Ontarians save money and energy. As the most populated province, our energy consumption has an enormous impact on climate change in Canada.

Switching to energy-efficient plumbing fixtures ensures that you’re doing your part, and at Drain King Plumbers, we’d like to help. Keep reading to find out how you can receive your rebate when one of our plumbers upgrades your fixtures.

Is my home eligible?

Enbridge Gas has a list of requirements, and we’ve summarized them below for you. If you check off all the boxes, you’re eligible for the rebate.

  • You’re a residential Enbridge Gas customer.
  • You’re using a natural gas furnace or boiler as your primary heating source (during the first and final energy assessment).
  • You’re planning to replace or repair old equipment and have not started yet.
  • You own a detached, semi-detached, row townhouse, or a mobile home with a permanent foundation.
  • The initial energy assessment was completed on or after June 3, 2021.

Please note that you cannot participate in the HER program if you’ve applied for an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) through the Canada Greener Homes Grant.

What upgrades are eligible?

Air Sealing

Rebate value: Up to $150.

Save on your heating costs in the winter and cooling costs in the summer by sealing cracks in walls, doors, and windows.

The replacement: If you achieve the base target determined during your home energy assessment, you’ll receive $100. If you achieve 10% or more above the determined base target, you’ll receive $150.

Insulation

Rebate value:

  • Up to $750 for attic insulation.
  • Up to $1250 for basement insulation.
  • Up to $3000 for exterior wall insulation.

You’ll be able to keep rooms at a comfortable temperature and avoid moisture damage by insulating thoroughly.

The replacement: Click here for details.

Boilers

Rebate value: Up to $1000.

When you replace your conventional boiler with an ultra-quiet condensing boiler, you’ll instantly save on heating costs.

The replacement: Your old boiler should have an AFUE rating below 90%. Your replacement should be a condensing boiler with an AFUE rating of 90% or higher.

Furnace

Rebate value: Up to $250.

Furnaces are not the most energy-efficient, so you have to complete three total upgrades to receive this rebate.

The replacement: Your old furnace should have an AFUE rating below 96%. Your replacement should be a condensing furnace with an AFUE rating of 96% or higher.

Water Heater

Rebate value: Up to $400.

Did you know that your water heater is the second-largest energy user in your home? They can use about 15% of your home’s energy, so an upgrade can save you some cash.

The replacement: There are three suitable water heater replacements:

  • ENERGY STAR® certified tank-type natural gas water heater with an Energy Factor (EF) rating of 0.77 or higher.
  • ENERGY STAR® certified tank-type natural gas water heater with a Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) rating of 0.80 or higher.
  • ENERGY STAR® certified tankless natural gas water heater with a UEF rating of 0.87 or higher.

Windows, Doors, and Skylights

Rebate value: Up to $40 each.

Do you ever notice a draft in your home? Energy-efficient windows, doors, and skylights eliminate drafts and condensation.

The replacement: Replace your existing windows, doors, and skylights with ENERGY STAR® certified models.

How to Apply

1. Schedule your home energy assessment

The first step to receiving your rebate is to schedule an energy assessment. Don’t start any replacement work until a registered energy advisor completes your assessment.

Enbridge Gas only authorizes registered energy advisors; click here to find an energy advisor in your area. You’ll be reimbursed up to $600 for the cost.

2. Get your custom report

After your initial assessment, your energy advisor will give you a report detailing suggested upgrades and replacements. You don’t have to take all their suggestions, but the more upgrades you make, the lower your energy bills will be.

3. Pick at least two upgrades

Pick any two eligible upgrades on your custom report to get started. You can receive up to $750 in bonuses for each additional upgrade. Don’t forget that you’ll need three upgrades for the furnace rebate.

4. Remember to schedule a follow-up assessment

If you don’t schedule a follow-up visit after your initial assessment, you won’t receive your rebate. Be sure to schedule it within 120 days of the first visit. The second assessment should only take an hour.

5. Wait for your cheque

All that’s left to do now is wait for your rebate to be mailed. It should come within 12 weeks and will include the reimbursement for your initial assessment.

Bonus Rebates

Install three upgrades: Get $150.

Install four upgrades: Get $500.

Install five or more upgrades: Get $750.

Plus: Receive an additional $500 rebate when you insulate 100% of your basement.

You can also receive larger rebates with the two bundle packages below.

To qualify, your first assessment must have been completed on or after February 1, 2022, and your final assessment completed by June 30, 2022.

Bundle 1: Get $1,600 when you upgrade air sealing and insulate 100% of your attic.

Bundle 2: Get $2,000 when you upgrade air sealing, insulate 100% of your attic, and upgrade your furnace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I do the upgrades myself?

Some upgrades may seem deceptively easy after watching a few videos about the topic, but much can go wrong.

Hiring a plumber in Toronto is thus strongly recommended. The last thing you want is for your DIY job to fail, forcing you to blow your rebate money on repairs.

Why do I need to complete two upgrades?

The energy fixtures in homes work as a team. When you upgrade one system, you make another more energy efficient.

Does Enbridge Gas use door-to-door salespeople?

No. Registered Energy Advisors will only show up at your door if you’ve booked an appointment to receive an energy assessment.

Enbridge Gas does not solicit customers over the phone or at their homes.
